Laparoscopy & cancer (laparoscopic surgical oncology) |
Until recently surgeons had second thoughts about using laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery for cancer patients. |
Cancer patients are debilitated, cachectic and have little resistance & resilience for major oncological (cancer) resections. |
Laparoscopic (key-hole) approach is not less than a wonder for oncology patients. |
Laparoscopic surgical oncology is not only about avoiding huge incisions which are required for cancer resections as complete disease clearance is a basic norm & rule for these operations. What is most wonderful about using laparoscope for cancer surgery is, it can reach to areas which in open or conventional surgery can only be dealt with by tactile (touch) sensations like deep down into the pelvis or high up in the hiatus for esophageal surgery. over & above in laparoscopic oncology practice the surgeon always takes control of the arteries & veins first and tumor is manipulated later which reduces the risk of cancer cells dissemination(spread) from the primary site. |
As there are no big incisions , problems of delayed or non-healing ,infection & hernias are minimal. Options of neo-adjuvant chemo-radiation or early start of post-op chemo-radiation is a very viable choice. Principles of oncological (cancer) surgery i.e. complete disease clearance with free resection margins can be strictly adhered to without any violation as the vision is complete & magnified. At present the laparoscopic oncological services offered can be seen in the section Diseases we Treat
